The Daleks

The Doctor first encountered the Daleks on the planet Skaro, where they [the Daleks] waged war on the peaceful Thals there. The Daleks first appeared on the show in 1963. The Dalek is comprised of several different pieces. The outside of the Dalek, or what we automatically see, is actually just used as protection. Like a knight wears armor, the Daleks use metal to protect them. The Dalek is actually a small squid-like creature that has tentacles and only one eye. The first time we actually see the inside of a Dalek is in the episode “Dalek”, where the outer shell is opened and we see the muted Dalek. Below is an image of the Dalek anatomy. As you can see, the Dalek is made up of many parts. The Daleks outer shell needed to be made in a way that would be able to protect the inside. When I first saw what the inside of a Dalek looks like, I was weirded out at first. In my opinion, they look like a squid that has been mutated. I’m not sure if that is what the creators of the show wanted, but if so, they nailed it!

The Daleks are not only seen in one season with one particular Doctor. The Daleks are actually involved with the First through the Twelfth Doctor. This also includes the War Doctor. The Daleks are still violent with each Doctor. Even when the Doctor regenerates, the Daleks are still an enemy that the Doctor has. The Doctor seems to have hard feelings against the Daleks, the reason why is revealed in the 50th anniversary episode of the Doctor. There’s some spoilers so I will not be mentioning anymore about the anniversary episode.

Each villain on Doctor Who has a catchphrase. The Daleks’ catchphrase just so happens to be “Exterminate” or “You will be exterminated”. We hear the Daleks say this in every episode in which they appear. Because they appear a lot on the show and show a lot of violence there is no doubt that the Daleks are the Doctor’s number one enemy. Using the rubric I created, I was able to see where the Dalek ranks on the chart against the other four villains.

The Daleks appear in 36 episodes, this includes old and new who, which racks up a lot of points on my rubric. I decided to give each villain 2 points for every episode they appear in. This gives the Dalek a total of 72 points just for being on the show. This doesn’t even include the points for the violence they create in the show. The number for the violence that is shown in the show, created by the Daleks, is basically the same as the number of episodes they appear in. In some episodes, they appear at the end and do not cause violence until the next episode. The number of points for violence created by the Daleks comes out to be 115 points, giving the Daleks a total of 187 points.
